Chana dal, also known as split chickpeas, is baby chickpeas that have been split. It has a flavour similar to sweet corn and is a staple in Indian cuisine. Chana dal is nutritious, easily digestible, and can be used in sweet and savoury dishes.
Chickpeas are packed with fiber and protein and loaded with important vitamins and minerals. Chickpeas contain antioxidants and may help fight free radicals. They are a low-GI food that has a gradual effect on blood sugar.
Chana dal can be added to soups, salads, curries, stews and sweet dishes and puddings. To prepare, soak the chickpeas in water overnight or for at least 3 hours. Add to a pot with plenty of water, allow to come to a boil, then reduce to a simmer for about 35 minutes until the chickpeas are tender. Drain excess water. Chana Dal can also be blended into a flour (besan flour).
