Cloves are dried unopened flower buds of an evergreen tree native to Indonesia. Extremely aromatic, cloves are a common spice used in Middle Eastern, Asian, Indian and African cuisines in dishes ranging from soups, stews, rice dishes, brewed beverages and sweets.
Cloves add aroma, flavour and nutrients! They are a good source of minerals, vitamins and fiber. One teaspoon of ground clove contains 55% of Manganese Daily value. Cloves are high in antioxidants, have antimicrobial properties, and may help regulate blood sugar.
Cloves can be used whole or in their ground powder form. Add to curries, rice, stews, soups, stocks, marinades and rubs. Ground clove can be added to cakes, cookies (gingerbread) and cobblers for a very warm flavour, similar to cinnamon. It can also be brewed for tea (chai) or coffee.
