Chingri (prawn) malaikari is an iconic Bengali prawn curry made by cooking large tiger prawns or giant freshwater lobster-like prawns in a subtly spiced, creamy sauce.

Bengali cuisine is most famous for its sweets and situated geographically in the Bay of Bengal, also a treasure trove of iconic seafood recipes.

Now a Bengali treat—chingri malaikari seems to have made its way into Bengali kitchens through contact with Malaysian traders; so ‘malaikari’ is actually ‘Malay’ curry, over time transliterated as ‘malai’ curry.
